아침일찍 밥을 먹고 그랜드캐년으로 출발....하지만

갑작스럽게 폭풍우가 닥쳐 겨우 위의 두장의 사진만 찍은 후 다시 모텔로 복귀.


이날은 술만 마셨다...






다음날 일찍 장비를 챙겨 같은곳으로 출발.

Louis 649 Bar


약 7~8년전 지인의 소개로 여기 라이브 재즈바 Louis 649에 가게 되었다. 

작은 문을 열고 들어가면 창가쪽에선 무료 재즈공연을 하고 안쪽으론 바와 작은 테이블들이 있던 아담하지만 분위기 있던 곳. 

그리고 Hamsa 라는 여기 주인 강아지가 바 안을 마구 뛰어다니던 기억이 생생하다. 

자주 찾아가 한손엔 와인을, 한손은 강아지를 쓰담으며 라이브 재즈를 즐기던 내 모습이 바로 엊그제 같다. 


2008년 어느날 오랜만에 들린 바엔 라이브 재즈음악도 들리지 않고 Hamsa도 보이지 않았다. 

주인한테 물어보니 Hamsa는 잠깐 다른곳에 가 있고 라이브 재즈는 더이상 안한다는 말을 듣고 그날 이후론 한번도 찾지 않았다...


바에서 Wine testing이나 Special event가 있을때 마다 이메일을 보내주는데 항상 제목만 보고 지우다 2012년 12월 30일에 역시나 이 바에서의 새해 이벤트에 대한 이메일이 왔다.

평소같으면 그냥 지워버렸지만 이날은 왠지 메일을 열어 아무생각없이 읽어내려가는데...

마지막에 Hamsa의 동영상과 12월 21일에 하늘나라로 갔다는 내용이 적혀 있었다. 


순간 난 2006년의 그곳으로 돌아갔고, 잠시후 암실로 들어가 예전에 찍었던 필름을 뒤져 Hamsa와 바에서 찍은 사진들을 찾아 다시 정성스레 스캔을 받은 후 바 주인에게 사진파일을 보냈다. Hamsa의 죽음을 애도한다는 글과 함께. 


다음날 바 주인에게 이메일이 왔는데 사진을 보내줘서 너무 고맙다며 다시 한번 들리면 자기가 한잔 사겠다고, 

그리고 Hamsa의 프린트된 사진을 구입하고 싶다는 것이다. 바에 걸어놓고 싶다는 말을 덧붙이며. 


손님들 다리 사이로 마구 뛰어 다니고 가끔 바 위로 손을 올리던 Hamsa를 떠올리며 이날밤 난 암실로 발길을 향했다...

Silence in Central Park, 2012

작년 이른 봄날인거 같다. 

친구의 전시 오프닝이 열린 갤러리가 마침 센트럴 파크 근처라 끝난 후 천천히 혼자 공원을 거닐었다. 

조금 늦은 시간이어서 인지 적막하기까지 한 공원의 모습이 조금은 낮설었지만 내 세번째 눈은 즐거워 하는듯 하다.

한참을 거닐다 많이 어두워지자 문득 예전에 본 영화 'The Brave One(2007)' 의 초반 장면이 떠올라 황급히 공원을 빠져 나왔던 기억이 난다.

Union Square Subway Station-L Train Platform, Manhattan, 2011-2012



뉴욕 맨하튼에서 지하철을 타고 집으로 갈때 90%는 여기에서 L Train을 기다린다. 

나름 Hot Spot인지 밤낮 구별없이 계단 밑의 좁은 공간에서 사람들은 각자의 장기를 선보이고, 


반대편에선 공연을 하던 말던 상관없이 지하철역 페인트 작업중이다.
